“Food and cooking are among the richest subjects in the world. Everyday of our lives, they preoccupy, delight, and refresh us. Food is not just some fuel we need to get us going towards higher things. Cooking is not a drudgery we put up with in order to get the fuel delivered. Rather, each is a heart’s astonishment. Both stop us dead in our tracks with wonder. Even more, they sit us down evening after evening, and in the company that forms around our dinner tables, they actually create our humanity.”
- Robert Farrar Capon, The Supper of the Lamb
Ever since I can remember, cooking and eating have been a passion of mine. Growing up I watched my mom measure and add ingredients for tasty and healthy meals, and then in college, I became the girl cooking and testing recipes for my roommates and friends. Now, I am a wife and momma making delicious and nutritious meals for my family. I’m a foodie, so for a recent family wedding, I initiated putting together a collection of tried-and-true family recipes for the newlyweds. The way I had to go about the collaboration, collection, and creation of the book was quite tedious, time-consuming, and an expensive project, but it also prompted the idea for Kinfolk Keepers.
I did research about software I could use to help me compile years of recipes from my collection of cookbooks, piles of newspaper and magazine clipped recipes and family favorites. I found options that allow you to create a physical family cookbook using a website, and a few apps that allow online recipe collection, but I didn’t find anything that stored my recipes and photos and allowed me to collaborate with others. So, my techie husband, Adam, built a website for us, we named it, Kinfolk Keepers.
I gifted the beta website to Adam’s sister along with an apron for our homemade Christmas gift exchange in 2019. Since then all of the Schoendient family have successfully added to it and are cooking from it! Having extra time at home these past few months, thanks to the pandemic, we’ve been putting final touches on the website.
Kinfolk Keepers is a personalized online recipe site designed to give friends and family a way to share their recipes. It’s easily accessible by computer or mobile devices and presents your recipes in a beautifully designed, simple-to-use interface. It’s a dynamic online cookbook library! A celebration of food shared.
